Apekshya Panda

Having spent her early life in Lucknow, India, Apekshya grew up in one of the birthplaces of Kathak, beginning her early dance career under the tutelage of Sri Sanjeev Roy from the Bhatkhande Institute. Apekshya entered her first classical dance competition at the Bal Mahotsav when she was five, where she ended up taking second place in the state of Uttar Pradesh. By the age of seven, she had completed two years of Allahabad Sangeet Samiti exams with distinction, before moving to Minnesota with her family. There, she continued her Kathak education under Guru Rita Mustaphi at Katha Dance Theatre (KDT) in Minneapolis. At the age of 10, she was the youngest performer in KDT’s The Ramayana, featuring international performers from Sri Lanka, Thailand and Cambodia. Over the decade Apekshya spent as an apprentice and company member at KDT, she has taken part in company productions including Black Candle, Beauty and the Beast, Soul to Sole, and Karna: the Abandoned Hero. Apekshya also had the honor of joining the KDT company in opening the Concert of the Legends featuring Pandit Birju Maharaj and Ustad Zakir Hussain. She has been featured with KDT on local media outlets in Minneapolis, including Geetmala on Twin Cities public television and on Kare 11 News. As a solo artist, Apekshya has performed at venues internationally including the Bath Indian Cultural Society in the UK and The Rotary Club in Orissa, India. Apekshya now resides in Boston, teaching and showcasing Kathak in an effort to be a cultural and artistic ambassador to the community.
